Sir Alex Ferguson believes the addition of Robin van Persie to his Manchester United squad will leave him with an attacking quartet of similar quality to the Red Devils’ treble-winning side from 1999.

Van Persie is set to be confirmed as a United player imminently after Arsenal agreed to sell the striker to the Red Devils for a fee of around £24m on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old Holland international will join fellow forwards Danny Welbeck, Javier Hernández and Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford.

And Ferguson feels United’s attacking line-up is now as strong as it has been for years.

“They’re two fantastic players [Rooney and Van Persie] and it’s great to have them both,” said Ferguson at a bwin sponsor launch on Thursday.

“But what gives us even more strength is the different combinations I have now. If you go back to the 1999 season, I had [Andy] Cole and [Dwight] Yorke and also Teddy [Sheringham] and Ole Gunnar [Solskjaer] – I had the four best strikers in Europe.

“Now I’ve got Wayne, Robin, Welbeck, Chicharito [Hernández], [Shinji] Kagawa – it’s a fantastic collection of players and hopefully I can pick the right combinations.”

Ferguson could not hide his delight at finally landing Van Persie following months of speculation over the Dutchman’s future as he entered the final year of his Arsenal contract.

“It’s great to have a player of Van Persie’s quality coming into our squad. I’m really pleased,” he added.

“The fee has been agreed which we’re delighted about. He’s on his way up from London and will have a medical later this afternoon [Thursday]. Hopefully that goes according to plan.”
