Joey Barton believes Sir Alex Ferguson should have left five years ago to ensure a smoother transition for his successor at Manchester United.

Current Red Devils boss David Moyes oversaw his side’s tame 2-0 loss to Olympiacos in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie in Greece on Tuesday night.

And Queens Park Rangers midfielder Barton laid the blame for United’s woes on Ferguson, adding that United need to sign five world-class players this summer.

Barton posted on Twitter: “Can’t help but feel sorry for Moyes. Fergie left a squad in need of a major overhaul. If he left when he should have (5yrs ago) [..] it would have been a smoother transition for the new man in charge. Woodwood’s 1st yr as Chief Ex never helps either. #fergiefault”

He continued: “If the Glazers and Woodwood don’t produce 5 top quality signings, the dynasty Fergie built will be gone in 18 months. #mental”

Barton also poked fun at Moyes and Wayne Rooney after the pair declared that United could win the Champions League prior to their first leg in Athens.

“When I heard Moyes and Rooney speaking about winning UCL yesterday, I thought they either know something I don’t or they’ve been smoking something iilegal. 62mins in. Seems it was the latter,” he added.
