Six Nations 2014: Rhys Priestland delighted with Wales recall

Six Nations 2014: Rhys Priestland admits he is desperate to repay Warren Gatland's faith against Italy on Saturday

Rhys Priestland admits he is desperate to prove Warren Gatland right after being given the nod at fly-half for Wales’ Six Nations opener against Italy on Saturday.

The 27-year-old guided his country to the Grand Slam in 2012 against France but he has been on the losing side nine times in his last ten appearances for Wales.

Last year it was Dan Biggar who was chosen to spearhead Wales’ defence of the Six Nations title, but with an unprecedented hat-trick in their sights the onus now falls on Priestland.

And the Scarlets No.10, who has endured a difficult spell on injuries over the past year, insists he is up to the task.

“I’m delighted to be playing on this occasion and hope the show the coaches made the right decision,” Priestland told Wales Online.

“It’s good to have a bit of faith from the coaches and I’m just grateful to have the opportunity this time. They have told me just to play my own game.”

Priestland, who has been impressive for the Scarlets in Europe this term, admits he has the potential to put in his best Six Nations showing ever this time round.

“There’s a fantastic team around me so I don’t see why I can’t be the best I have ever been,” he added.

“All I’m trying to do is enjoy my rugby. I’ve managed to do that for most parts of the year.

“This is the best season I have had so, hopefully, that form will transfer from my regional team to international level.”
