Jose Mourinho admitted Oscar deserved his yellow card for diving after watching his Chelsea side seal victory at Southampton.

The Brazil midfielder, a second-half substitute for Juan Mata, was booked by referee Martin Atkinson after going down under a challenge from Kelvin Davis soon after coming on.

The Blues took the lead at St Mary’s moments later when Fernando Torres netted a header from close range in the 60th minute, before Oscar set up Willian to make it 2-0.

And Oscar then capped an impressive cameo display when he fired home a left-footed shot in the 82nd minute to wrap up the three points and keep Chelsea third in the table.

“The yellow card was very much deserved,” Mourinho told BT Sport. “I am happy with the decision but I think that Oscar is a clean boy.

“He’s waiting for the contact from the goalkeeper, and [if it arrives] it is a penalty, a red card, and [maybe] a goal. The game is then in our pocket.

“It was a good decision from referee Martin Atkinson, it should happen more in this country.

“That type of thing happens every week and yellows should be given. Not in Oscar’s case though, he is normally a very fair boy.”

Mourinho was pleased with his side’s overall display and reserved particular praise for second-half substitutes Willian and Oscar.

“We did very well and managed to defend very well in the box,” he said.

“We were fighting and sliding and defending with everything we had. When we had the ball we were always dangerous and, in the second half, I think Willian and Oscar gave us a different intensity and speed and after that the game was open and quite easy for us.”
