Mauricio Pochettino has described Southampton’s 3-0 loss to West Bromwich Albion as the “worst defeat” of his Saints’s reign.

West Brom striker Marc Antoine-Fortune made the breakthrough in the sixth minute after capitalising on poor Southampton defending at St Mary’s Stadium.

Fortune also had a hand in the Baggies’s second goal as he teed up on-loan Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku, who calmly finished past Saints keeper Artur Boruc.

However, Fortune’s afternoon took a turn for the worst when he was dismissed after a clash with Gaston Ramirez before Shane Long added a third for the visitors, with Danny Fox also receiving a red card for a two-footed challenge in the 82nd minute.

“This is the worst defeat we have had here at Southampton [in his time at the club]. The team did not have any positive impact,” Pochettino told BBC Sport.

“We need to review the red cards but more importantly we need to review our performance, we were not really good today.

“We were uncomfortable from the beginning. We showed a performance that is the opposite of what we really are.”

Meanwhile, West Brom boss Steve Clarke heaped praise on his side for showing a superior work-rate to the Saints, insisting his side deserved three points.

“There is no coincidence that the team works hard and we get a clean sheet. It has been a difficult second half of the season but we did a lot of work in the first half of the campaign. Hopefully now we can pick up a few more wins towards the end of the season.

“That performance today tells everyone why we have been in the top half all season.

“I think the red cards were clear. I have not seen the replay, but Marc [Antoine Fortune] said he caught him in the face and by the rules that is a red card.”
