Mark Nolan insisted West Ham United were happy with a “good point” after the Hammers held Southampton to a goalless draw at St Mary’s.

The Saints had the best of the early opportunities as Rickie Lambert capitalised on a mistake from James Collins and teed up new signing Pablo Osvaldo, but the Italian was denied by Jussi Jaaskelainen.

The east London side did have a goal chalked off for offside in the first half before Victor Wanyama’s audacious long-range effort brought an acrobatic save from Hammers shot stopper Jaaskelainen early after the interval.

Lambert, fresh from his latest England caps, hit the woodwork midway through the second half, but the best chance fell to West Ham defender Collins, who skied an effort in the Saints area in the closing moments of the match.

“Jussi dug us out a couple of times. I think the result was quite fair,” Noble told Sky Sports.

“We’re happy with a point. We’ve had a lot of injuries over the past week with Andy Carroll, Stewart Downing and Joey O’Brien. It’s a big miss for us. But we dug deep and we’re happy with a good point.”

On Jaaskerlainen’s performance, Nolan added: “He’s getting on now but he’s still keeping us in games.

“He was brilliant today. When you keep clean sheets, it’s a massive help if you’re struggling to score goals.”

Asked about his favourite save, the West Ham goalkeeper said: “A clean sheet gives you the most satisfaction. We got a good point after especially following a disappointing result at Stoke.

“We had a couple of chances and could have scored as well.”
