Stoke 0 Man United 2: Robin van Persie admits his relief at finally ending his 10-game streak without a goal after netting a penalty
Robin van Persie admitted his relief at finally ending his 10-game streak without a goal after his penalty helped Manchester United to victory at Stoke.
United took the lead at a blustery Britannia Stadium after just four minutes when Michael Carrick poked an effort into the bottom left corner.
And Van Persie wrapped up the three points for the Red Devils when he slotted home his spot-kick in the 66th minute after he was fouled by Andy Wilkinson in the box.
“It was a relief,” Van Persie told Sky Sports. “I had to score that one and thankfully it went in and after that the relief of a couple of weeks came out.
“I wanted to celebrate it with them: the players, the staff. They’ve been great with me from day one.
“Even when it’s sometimes been a little bit harder, they still believe in me, support me and help me whenever they can.”
United opened up a 15-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the table as they took a step closer to a 20th top-flight title.
And Van Persie wants to see the Red Devils win all of their remaining six games.
“The aim is to win all six remaining games,” he added. “The manager said that the season started earlier today and we’ve got six to so we have to go for all of them.
“If we win them all we’ll get a record in our pockets. It’s a nice target for all of us.”
