Asmir Begovic Could do little about Falcao’s corner. Fortunate to escape without punishment for raising a high leg in Van Persie’s direction. 6/10

Erik Pieters Solid performance from the full-back. Shepherded Januzaj down the wing when the Belgian threatened to lead a dangerous United counter-attack. 7

Ryan Shawcross The Stoke captain kept his head to guide Crouch’s knock-down into the roof of the United net inside two minutes. Couldn’t prevent Carrick from flicking Rooney’s corner onto Falcao, though. 6

Marc Muniesa Covered his centre-half partner well. A competent performance against United. 6

Geoff Cameron Glanced a header over the crossbar in the first half. Didn’t allow much down his wing. 6

Marko Anautovic The midfielder’s free-kicks caused the United defence problems. Anautovic provided Stoke with some guile in the centre of the park, looking to feed Crouch and Diouf. His work-rate was excellent. 7

Glenn Whelan Typical performance from the Irishman. Solid if unspectacular. 6

Steven N’Zonzi (Man of the match) Kept Mata and Rooney muted in the first half. The 26-year-old continued his impressive form this season, even driving forward on occasion to cause United problems. 8

Jonathan Walters Like Whelan, it was very much a cliched Walters display. He worked hard, but lacked a touch of class. 6

Mame Biram Diouf Brilliant work to force a mistake from Evans, but the Stoke striker lacked composure with only De Gea to beat. His powerful volley was deflected wide by Smalling. 7

Peter Crouch Produced his second assist of the season, finding Shawcross with his cushioned header. It means Crouch has 53 assists, as many as Van Persie. He hit the woodwork with a second-half header. 7

David De Gea Even the Premier League’s form goalkeeper could do nothing to prevent Shawcross’s powerful finish. 6

Luke Shaw Let Crouch escape as the Stoke striker teed up Shawcross for the opener. Overall, though, a solid comeback for the left-back. 6

Jonny Evans The Northern Irishman was outmuscled by Diouf, but escaped unpunished. He was uncomfortable with the blustery Britannia Stadium conditions and Stoke’s direct approach. 4

Chris Smalling Poor marking job on Crouch for Shawcross’s strike. Escaped with a blatant handball in the second half, referee Michael Oliver won’t be sharing a New Year’s Day glass of wine with Stoke boss Mark Hughes. 4

Phil Jones Coped better with Stoke pressure than his defensive team-mates. Stooped low to divert danger in the second half, highlighting his bravery. 6

Ashley Young Whipped in a couple of dangerous crosses into the Stoke area. Had to come off injured midway through the second half. 5

Juan Mata The Spaniard didn’t feature much in the first half as he was dwarfed by N’Zonzi. Did little of note. 5

Michael Carrick Vital flick on to nudge Rooney’s corner into Falcao’s path. It was his first assist since Boxing Day in 2012. 6

Wayne Rooney Fired a first-half free-kick harmlessly over Begovic’s crossbar. However, his set-piece delivery improved for Falcao’s equaliser. Couldn’t really get into his passing game with such difficult conditions. 6

Robin van Persie Took exception to Begovic’s raised leg. The Dutch striker came close to scoring a brilliant equaliser, controlling a pass with his chest before he looped a deft chip narrowly wide. 6

Radamel Falcao Had the chance to set Van Persie free but the Colombian’s pass lacked pace. Made no mistake from close range in the 25th minute, slotting his finish past Begovic. He looked more dangerous than Van Persie, making his 63rd-minute substitution all the more surprising. 7

Adnan Januzaj Great cross to find Van Persie, but the striker couldn’t test Begovic. 6

Rafael da Silva Late effort blocked. 5
