Mark Hughes admitted Queens Park Rangers were “devastated” to lose at the Britannia Stadium after Charlie Adam’s second-half strike sealed victory for Stoke City.

QPR midfielder Adel Taarabt missed the best chance of the first half when the Morocco international’s tame chip failed to test Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

The Hoops were punished for being wasteful when Jonathan Walters and Peter Crouch combined to tee up Adam, with the former Liverpool man putting the home side ahead in the 52nd minute.

Hughes’ men, who are still without a victory in the Premier League this season, searched for an equaliser and Spanish star Esteban Granero came closest when he drew a top save from the Potters goalkeeper.

But Tony Pulis’ men held firm and condemned the west Londoners to their seventh defeat of the season.

“We keep on working hard. The players are giving everything and they are devastated in the dressing room because they know they deserved something from the game,” Hughes, whose side are bottom of the table on four points, told BBC Sport.

“Absolutely [I have support from those above]. It is difficult for everybody because we are desperate to get that win everybody feels we deserve.”

Hughes added: “We can’t keep on thinking that we’re doing OK, because we’re not winning Premier League games.

“I’d rather play poorly and get the win on the board, because that’s what we need at this moment in time to settle everyone down. A lot of what we’re doing is OK but we need to take that final step.”
