Michael Owen has admitted he wants to end his miserable run against former club Liverpool ahead of the Reds trip to Stoke City on Boxing Day.

The 33-year-old has never scored against the Merseyside outfit despite facing Liverpool during spells at Manchester United and Newcastle United.

Owen, who scored 118 goals in 216 appearances for the Reds, joined Stoke City on a free transfer in the summer but is yet to find the net for Tony Pulis’ side.

The England international has been struggling with a hamstring injury, but Owen, who has fond memories of his time at Liverpool, hopes to be fit for Wednesday’s tie at the Britannia Stadium.

“It is a strange feeling really playing against your old club, especially one where you were there for around 15 years,” Owen said.

“Liverpool are a big part of my life and career and I had some of the best times of my life at the club.

“So certainly I have happy memories. I have not been so happy playing against them since; I have never scored and not particularly enjoyed it.”
