Sunderland 1 Arsenal 3: Arsene Wenger thrilled with Mesut Ozil's "absolutely outstanding" Premier League debut
Arsene Wenger was thrilled with Mesut Ozil’s “absolutely outstanding” Premier League debut as Arsenal sealed victory at Sunderland.
The Germany international set up Olivier Giroud for the Gunners’ opener at the Stadium of Light as he made his first appearance in an Arsenal shirt following his £42.5m summer move from Real Madrid.
Two second-half goals from Aaron Ramsey then secured the victory for Wenger’s men after Craig Gardner had levelled from the penalty spot.
And Wenger heaped praise on Ozil for an electric debut display in the English top flight.
“He was absolutely outstanding,” Wenger told Sky Sports.
“In the second half he was lacking a bit physically, but considering he has been ill this week, he was very good.”
Wenger continued: “It was a very interesting match. There were lots of good chances early on, and we could have won the game by half-time.
“We dropped physically in the second half, but we found a bit more and then took our chances.”
Wenger also singled out Ramsey for special praise after the Wales midfielder continued his impressive run of form with a brace in Saturday’s clash.
“He [Ramsey] is a different player to one year ago in September,” he said.
“Many people questioned him, so credit to him. He works very hard and has improved dramatically. It’s absolutely fantastic what he is doing.”
Meanwhile, Wenger also confirmed that Arsenal playmaker Santi Cazorla has been ruled out until October due to an ankle injury.
