Daniel Sturridge admitted his delight at Luis Suárez’s return to Premier League action as the Uruguay striker’s double helped Liverpool beat Sunderland.

Sturridge gave Brendan Rodgers’ side the lead at the Stadium of Light in the 28th minute with a close-range effort that appeared to hit his arm.

The England international then teed up Suárez for a goal either side of Emanuele Giaccherini’s strike as the 26-year-old twice found the net following his return from a 10-game ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic.

“Luis gives me angles to play and for me it’s about getting assists as well as scoring,” man-of-the-match Sturridge told Sky Sports.

“It’s about the team winning games and if someone’s in a better position, you put them in to score a goal.

“It’s great to have him back, it gives us options. He’s one of the best forwards in the league and we could form a good partnership.

“We miss Philippe Coutinho with his injury but we’ve got some great players in this team. I’m happy to be playing with such world-class players.”

Sturridge, who helped the Reds seal a win which moved them up to second place in the table, admitted the Merseysiders were made to work hard for the three points.

“It was a very hard game for us,” said Sturridge, who scored his fifth Premier League goal of the season. “I don’t think we played as well as we could have in the first half but we went in 2-0 up.

“It was very difficult in the second half, we took our foot of the pedal a little bit and once they scored the goal it got a bit more difficult for us.

“But we defended well towards the end of the game and got a late goal which killed it off.”

Liverpool are just two points behind early pace-setters Arsenal, but Sturridge was quick to play down talk of a title challenge.

“We have to take every game as it comes,” he said. “That’s the most important thing – don’t worry about the future, worry about the here and now.”
