Roberto Mancini admitted he is concerned about the form of his misfiring strikers after Manchester City crashed to a shock loss to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
City were brighter in the first half and Vincent Kompany’s header struck the crossbar before Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet made a smart save from Yaya Toure.
But ironically, it was former Citizens winger Adam Johnson who gave the home side a 53rd-minute lead when his long-range curling shot caught Joe Hart wrong-footed.
Mancini’s men came close to snatching a draw in the dying moments as Sergio Aguero was denied by the sharp reflexes of Mignolet just before full-time.
“It’s the same story for us at Sunderland every year, we are not going to come here next season. But last year we didn’t win here and we won the title,” Mancini told BBC Sport.
“It’s important that our strikers start scoring more goals, sometimes we take one touch too many.
“We missed five or six chances in the first half, and we need to score first in games sometimes. We can’t recover all the time.”
City are now seven points behind Manchester United after Javier Hernandez netted a late winner to help Sir Alex Ferguson’s side secure a 4-3 victory over Newcastle United at Old Trafford.
