Jose Mourinho expressed his frustration at Chelsea’s inability to “kill opponents” after Sunderland sent the Blues crashing out of the League Cup.

Frank Lampard made the breakthrough in the 46th minute of the quarter-final clash after the ball was adjudged to have crossed the line following a scramble between Lee Cattermole and the Chelsea midfielder.

We have lost every match because we don’t kill opponents and we give them life

Minutes later, Blues striker Samuel Eto’o wasted a glorious chance to cement his side’s place in the semi-final draw but dragged his finish the wrong side of Vito Mannone’s post.

Sunderland substitute Fabio Borini made the visitors pay for their wastefulness when he guided a composed strike past Blues shot-stopper Mark Schwarzer in the 89th minute to force extra-time.

And the Black Cats booked their place in the last four when Ki Sung-Yueng slotted past the Chelsea number two Schwarzer in the 118th minute at the Stadium of Light.

“We played very well,” Mourinho told Sky Sports. “Once more the quality of football we produce is amazing; what we do when we have possession of the ball and the way we create.

“The story repeats. It’s the same story of Stoke and of Everton – and every match we’ve lost.

“We have never lost a match because we didn’t play or the opponent was stronger than us, we have lost every match because we don’t kill opponents and we give them life.

“Every opponent who plays against us knows that they can score a goal and change the truth of the result.

“We had fantastic chances to score. It’s always the same story and the story repeats.”

When asked why his Chelsea side were lacking a ruthless edge, Mourinho replied: “I get asked the same question every day and the answer is the same. Please don’t make me answer that question because I can’t answer that question.”
