Sunderland 2 Newcastle 1: My goal can change our season – Borini
Sunderland 2 Newcastle 1: Fabio Borini thrilled after coming off the bench to fire Black Cats to their first win of the season
Fabio Borini could not hide his delight after coming off the bench to fire Sunderland to their first win of the season against local rivals Newcastle.
Gus Poyet’s men had taken the lead in the fifth minute at the Stadium of Light when Steven Fletcher headed in Adam Johnson’s cross.
The visitors drew level in the 57th minute when Mathieu Debuchy fired home – but substitute Borini’s 25-yard strike late on sealed the win for the home side and lifted them off the foot of the Premier League table.
“We hope that goal can change our season,” said Borini, who is on loan at Sunderland from Liverpool. “It was a special game and we can hopefully get a few wins now.
“If we play like that we can improve our game. It was an unbelievable moment to score the winner in the derby.”
Meanwhile, Black Cats boss Poyet was thrilled to watch his side record their first win of the new campaign.
“Everything is big today,” said Poyet. “It’s a first win against our biggest rivals in our first home game. The fans are going to be delighted and the players will be relieved. We needed this.
“The win gives us everything. We needed something. Now there are no excuses, we can go next week and win another game and continue to improve.
“This will change our season. I’m sure the players will be even more together and the fans will look forward to the next game. We have done nothing, it was nice for us and the fans but we need to keep winning games.”
Newcastle boss Alan Pardew felt that the Magpies were unlucky to lose the game after conjuring an equaliser in the second half.
“I thought we were the better team,” said Pardew. “We just switched off and he [Borini] has hit it true. I’m just disappointed for everybody at Newcastle.
“We will have to bounce back and be strong. This is always a high profile game and we have lost it.”
