Gus Poyet admitted that Southampton “need” to strengthen their squad in the January transfer window after his side came from behind to earn a draw against Southampton.

The Saints raced into a 2-0 lead at the Stadium of Light after Jay Rodriguez fired home a low shot and Dejan Lovren’s volley from a corner.

But Poyet’s men cut the deficit moments later through Fabio Borini, before Adam Johnson rifled in an equaliser in the 71st minute.

The draw leaves Sunderland 19th in the Premier League table and a point from safety – and Poyet concedes that he has no choice but to bolster his squad this month.

“We have to [strengthen],” Poyet told BT Sport.

“I cannot tell you anything because I don’t know when it’s going to happen. It doesn’t depend only on us – it depends on the players and the clubs.

“Everything has to come together but we need to [sign players] because we need to change things that haven’t worked for the last four or five months.

“It’s a great opportunity to try and change a little bit and get better.”
