Swansea 1 Tottenham 2: Andre Villas-Boas says his Spurs side have shown they have what it takes to seal a top-four finish with win
Andre Villas-Boas declared that his Tottenham side’s battling display at Swansea demonstrated that the north Londoners have what it takes to secure a top-four finish this season.
Spurs raced into a 2-0 lead at the Liberty Stadium thanks to goals from Jan Vertonghen and Gareth Bale inside 21 minutes, before Michu headed home from a corner in the 71st minute to set up a tense finale in South Wales.
However, Villas-Boas’s men hung on despite relentless pressure from the home side to leapfrog Chelsea into third place in the Premier League table and take a step closer to Champions League qualification.
“It shows how ambitious they are to reach our objectives,” Villas-Boas, whose side went into the game following back-to-back Premier League defeats, told BBC Sport.
“I have to compliment everybody for their work rate defensively and offensively.
“It was very important to bounce back after what happened in the last two games. It’s a difficult ground to come to but a great win for us, and a great winning mentality from the boys.”
The Portuguese coach added: “The team was impressive from the start. We reached the 2-0 lead very early and at half-time we spoke about getting the third goal, it didn’t happen but I think the boys showed great mentality to hold on.”
Tottenham’s next league game is a home clash with Everton at White Hart Lane next Sunday.
