Brendan Rodgers insisted he was happy with a “really big point” after Liverpool held off late Swansea City pressure to secure a draw at the Liberty Stadium.

Jonjo Shelvey, who moved to the Welsh side from Liverpool in June, gave Swansea the lead against his former club when he finished past Reds goalkeeper Simon Mignolet in the second minute.

However, Shelvey played a key part in both of the visitors’ first-half goals as he hit two sloppy passes which allowed Daniel Sturridge and Victor Moses to overturn Swansea’s lead.

Michael Laudrup kept the ex-Reds midfielder on the pitch after the interval, and the youngster rewarded his manager’s faith as he came up with the assist for Michu’s leveller in the 64th minute.

“I thought for the first 65 minutes we were very, very good with and without the ball. We had to show character after going behind so early,” Rodgers told BBC Sport.

“I thought we were terrific for 65 minutes. We scored two good goals, and in the last 25 minutes we had to show defensive resilience.

“This will be a really big point for us.”

He continued: “Philippe Coutinho’s substitution interrupted our flow. Iago Aspas is more of a striking player.

“Victor Moses has always played really well here. I had a feeling for him tonight, he scored here last year for Chelsea.”

On Shelvey, Rodgers added: “Jonjo Shelvey is an outstanding young player. Tonight is a part of his learning.

“He knows he has things in his game that he needs to improve on, and he will only do that from playing. Tonight was a steep learning curve for him.”
