Jonjo Shelvey apologised to Swansea’s fans after two mistakes from the midfielder gifted his former club Liverpool both of their goals in a thrilling draw.

Shelvey gave the hosts a dream start after just 87 seconds at the Liberty Stadium when he fired home from close range, but his poor back-pass set up Daniel Sturridge’s equaliser moments later.

The midfielder, who joined the Swans from the Reds earlier in the summer, then gifted possession to Victor Moses, who duly put Liverpool 2-1 up before half-time.

However, Shelvey made amends after the break when his flick-on found Michu, who netted the home side’s equaliser.

But after the Swans dominated large portions of the second half, the 21-year-old was inconsolable after the game.

“I just want to say sorry to the Swansea fans for two big mistakes,” Shelvey told Sky Sports. “I gifted Liverpool a draw really, and I thought we deserved more than that.

“Obviously it started tremendously, getting a goal before the two poor mistakes. But I showed a bit of character to keep getting on the ball and set the next goal up.

“I’m still disappointed but that’s what football’s about.

“We showed what this club’s about. The way we pass teams off the park, I think we deserve to be getting three points more often.

“I didn’t really want to celebrate because I have huge respect for the Liverpool fans I loved every minute of being there – but it’s hard to hide your emotions.

“It was good to score but I can’t stop thinking about the two mistakes.

“You just want to go into a hole where no-one can see you but football’s about coming back from things like that.

“It’s happened to great players in their time – I’ve seen Steven [Gerrard] give the ball away to Thierry Henry before. It’s just a horrible feeling – you don’t wish it on anyone, even your worst enemies.”
