Paul Merson sends message to Arsene Wenger about new Arsenal signing
The Arsenal legend wants to see Arsene Wenger start Henrikh Mkhitaryan against Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium on Tuesday night
Paul Merson has urged Arsene Wenger to start Arsenal signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan at Swansea City on Tuesday night.
The Gunners signed the Armenia international in a swap deal with Manchester United last week after Alexis Sanchez completed a move to Old Trafford.
Mkhitaryan will be tasked with filling Sanchez’z void in the Arsenal team and could make his first appearance for the Gunners on Tuesday night.
Arsenal will make the trip to Swansea looking to secure three points on the road for the first time since a 3-2 win at Crystal Palace before the end of 2017.
The north London side are five points adrift of Liverpool FC in the race to secure a top-four finish and can ill-afford to lose more ground in south Wales on Tuesday night.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson is urging Arsene Wenger to give Mkhitaryan is first start against Swansea.
“We could see the debut of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and if it was me, I’d definitely play him,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“Some people might say he hasn’t had much football in recent months but with the way Swansea will set up, Arsenal will have a lot of the ball.
“They could have up to 70 per cent possession so his creativity will prove useful.”
Arsenal have handed the attacking midfielder their number seven shirt following his switch to the Emirates Stadium.
Mkhitaryan won the Europa League and the FA Cup during his first season at Manchester United.
The Gunners finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last term after ending up behind fourth-placed Liverpool FC.
