Swindon 0 Chelsea 2: Fernando Torres is hoping his display will help stake a claim for a regular spot in the first team
Fernando Torres is hoping his man-of-the-match display at Swindon will help stake a claim for a regular spot in Chelsea’s first team.
The Spain international scored the opener with a neat close-range finish in the 29th minute at the County Ground, before sliding in Ramires, who netted the Blues’ second to secure a place in the fourth round of the League Cup.
And Torres, who has only started one league game under Jose Mourinho so far this season, is hoping to rack up some minutes in the top flight in the coming weeks.
“I think in the last couple of seasons I’ve been involved more in the cup competitions than in the Premier League,” Torres, who returned to the starting line-up alongside fellow Spaniard Juan Mata, told Sky Sports.
“I’m scoring more goals in the cups than in the league but hopefully I’ll have the chance to play more often in the Premier League and score some goals.
“We know the season is long and we’re all going to have time to play important games. We have a big squad and we all hope to be involved.
“Hopefully we can keep the hard work [up] and we’ll be in the manager’s plans.”
