Walcott: Arsenal too experienced to just be challenging for fourth
Theo Walcott claims Arsenal are "too experienced" to just be challenging for a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League
Theo Walcott claims Arsenal are “too experienced” to just be challenging for a fourth-placed finish, insisting the Gunners should be mounting a Premier League title challenge every season.
The Gunners have failed to piece together an assault on the top-flight title in recent seasons, instead turning their attentions to securing a place in the top four and Champions League qualification.
Arsene Wenger’s men face a real fight to book their place in next season’s elite club competition, with Arsenal currently two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea with eight games left to play.
And Walcott has called on his team-mates to move up a level next season and make sure they are challenging for the title from the off.
“The guys have got it,” Walcott told Arsenal Player. “Mentally, they are very strong. It’s realising how we cope when we come back from those disappointing results. We just need to do it every week – it’s as simple as that.
“There’s great potential there. We’ve had too much experience now to be challenging for fourth. We need to be challenging for the Premier League because that’s what we want to be known for.
“We want to be in the history books… we need to win something now.”
Walcott, who signed a new Arsenal contract earlier this term, has scored 18 goals in 37 appearances for the Gunners this season, making 15 assists for his team-mates in the process.
