Arsenal ready to end trophy drought, says Thierry Henry
Former Arsenal striker believes his old club can finally end their six-year wait for silverware this season
Former gunner Thierry Henry is convinced Arsenal are finally ready to deliver silverware this season.
The New York Red Bulls striker, 33, has been training with his old club during the Major League Soccer close season and insists Arsenal’s next generation are closer than ever to ending their six-year wait for a trophy.
“The guys in the Arsenal dressing room are confident. It all depends on them - Arsenal play the best football,” Henry said. “I became Arsenal fan and like all the Arsenal fans I want them to bring back silverware - that would be the cherry on the cake, especially for the boss and the fans.”
The forward, who scored 226 goals and won five major trophies with the north Londoners, added: “This generation are talented, there is just that little piece of silverware missing.”
Arsene Wenger’s men are still fighting on all four fronts this season and Henry believes the gunners are well placed to upset Barcelona in the last 16 of the Champions League.
“That is going to be the two best teams in terms of football,” he said. “Both clubs play the way football should be played. I think for the neutral it will be an amazing game.
“For me? I’m an Arsenal fan but have a lot of friends at Barca - so it will be a difficult one. But if any team can beat Barca, it would be Arsenal.”
And Henry hopes skipper Cesc Fabregas will stay in north London instead of seeking a return to his boyhood club Barcelona. He added: “Cesc is from Spain, but as an Arsenal fan I want him to stay at Arsenal. Right now you can see his commitment playing for the club.”
