Everton remained on course to finish above Liverpool after the Toffees secured a goalless draw in the Merseyside derby at Anfield.

Daniel Sturridge peppered Tim Howard’s goal with attempts in the first half before Sylvain Distin denied Steven Gerrard with a last-ditch clearance – and the French defender had a goal harshly disallowed by referee Martin Oliver after half-time.

Here is a selection of our favourite tweets from the professionals, both past and present, after Sunday’s stalemate at Anfield

Former Everton captain Tim Cahill ‏(@Tim_Cahill) reckons the Toffees will have to keep a close eye on Gerrard: “Game time – have to keep Gerrard quiet and press these guys and rough them up as soon as the whistle blows. I love these games #coyb #jft96”

Ex-Liverpool left-back Djimi Traore (‏@Djimi_Traore19) is tuning in from the US: “@LFC just woke up to watch Merseyside derby. #c’mon Liverpool!”

Everton legend Neville Southall ‏(@NevilleSouthall) wants the Toffees to capitalise on their height advantage: “So far so good. Playing ok. They will struggle on set plays if we put ball in box.”

Cahill (‏@Tim_Cahill) is glad to see Nikica Jelavic warming up: “Hahaha.. Jelavic on. Yesssss. This has been my club for 8-9 years. I’m just in manager mode and had the gut feeling. #COYB”

Former Crystal Palace striker Mark Bright (‏@Mark__Bright) isn’t impressed by Gerrard’s dissent: “I’m no lip reader but come on Stevie G… #respect the #Ref!”

Leicester striker and Everton fan David Nugent ‏(@nuge101235) feels a draw is a fair result: “Poor game! Take a point though!”

England rugby legend Matt Dawson (‏@matt9dawson) is critical of the referee’s decision to disallow Distin’s header: “Can someone tell me why Everton’s goal was disallowed!!? #robbed”

Former Everton midfielder Kevin Kilbane ‏(@kdkilbane77) agrees: “Good point for @Everton but a bit unlucky with the disallowed goal.”

Southall ‏(@NevilleSouthall) adds: “Two teams without a cutting edge. Played ok. Scored goal but rubbish decision. Defence class.”

Liverpool youngster Adam Morgan ‏(@AMorgan94) felt a draw was the right result: “Just got home from the game.. Fair result I thought an great gesture from our fans to thank Everton for their support.. One city!!!”

Everton youngster Shane Duffy ‏(@ShaneDuffy34) praises his senior team-mates: “Fans were brilliant today. Decent result. Jags and Distin superb again! #2moregames”

Toffees skipper Phil Neville (‏@fizzer18) hails Jagielka: “Good point. Defended really well. Phil Jagielka is playing as well as any other centre-half in the country at the moment!!!”

And finally, former Liverpool striker Florent Sinama Pongolle ‏(@sinamapongolle) enjoyed the experience of the Merseyside derby as a fan: “No word to explain this feeling…Anfield just incredible.. was just missing the 3 points…come on Reds!”
