England edged towards World Cup qualification after the Three Lions picked up a valuable point in a goalless draw with Ukraine in Kiev.

Arsenal forward Theo Walcott was denied by a brave save from Ukraine’s Andriy Pyatov in the third minute before Chelsea’s Frank Lampard guided a free header narrowly wide on the stroke of full-time.

Here is a selection of our favourite tweets from the professionals, past and present, in chronological order as Roy Hodgson’s men cemented their position on top of Group H.

West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster ‏(@BenFoster) reckons England can sneek a win: “What are we saying about the football tonight?? I’m going for a 1-0 win, with Lambert to bag. Big game this, Come on, England #WCQ”

QPR winger Shaun Wright-Phillips (‏@swp29) congratulates his former Chelsea team-mate: “Congratulations to Frank Lampard on his 100th England cap. #Legend #Lamps100 well done lad!”

More praise from a former colleague England Rio Ferdinand (‏@rioferdy5): “Congrats Lamps, great pro and goal scorer extraordinaire! #100caps”

Spain’s Gaizka Mendieta ‏(@GaizkaMendieta6) is enjoying Ukraine’s wing play – England are not: “Ukraine loving those diagonals from the left side! #UkrvEng”

Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann (‏@DietmarHamann) can’t understand why Michael Carrick isn’t playing: “Carrick is one of the few top class players England got and he can’t get a game. He does keep the ball as well as anyone. Beyond belief.”

Ex-West Ham United defender Neil Ruddock (‏@RealRazor) wants Hodgson to bring on Jermain Defoe: “Get Defoe on …”

England legend Gary Lineker ‏(@GaryLineker) can’t understand why the Three Lions can’t hold onto the ball: “We’re on the precipice here. KEEP THE BALL.”

QPR midfielder Joey Barton ‏(@Joey7Barton) can’t fathom why Hodgson is playing Jack Wilshere out of position: “Wilshere has never been a number 10? Why does Roy ‘the tactical genius’ play him there? He’s a ball playing midfielder. Needs to face the play.”

Ex-England international Dean Ashton ‏(@Dean36ashton10) got his prediction badly wrong: “3-1 England!!! What was I smoking??!! #boresville”

More from Hamann (‏@DietmarHamann): “Wilshere is world class, done nothing in the game yet. Carrick is a vital part of United, won five leagues and Champions League and is not even considered.”

Manchester United’s Tom Cleverley ‏(@tomclevz23) is happy with a point in Kiev: “Good solid performance from the boys tonight sets us up for two big nights at Wembley!”

England legend Michael Owen (‏@themichaelowen) is impressed by the veterans: “Our best players are still the older brigade. Gerrard, in particular is by far our best player. Some overhyped youngsters… How many of the England players that pulled out of tonight’s game will be available to play for their clubs this weekend?”

Finally, Stan Collymore (‏@StanCollymore) wants to see the powers that be address the issues: “If only Scudamore and his 20 chairmen realised that the league and England can work and grow together. Instead, one is destroying the other.”
