Andre Villas-Boas admitted it just wasn’t Tottenham’s day after Fulham secured a surprise win at White Hart Lane to deal a blow to Spurs’ hopes of Champions League qualification.

Dimitar Berbatov came back to haunt his former employers when he struck the winner at White Hart Lane after Gareth Bale had come close to putting Spurs ahead.

The Bulgarian striker turned home Sascha Riether’s cross in the 52nd minute, before Brede Hangeland almost doubled the visitors’ lead when he headed wide.

The defeat allowed Chelsea to leapfrog the north Londoners back into third place and reopened the race for a top-four finish, leaving Spurs just four points ahead of Arsenal, who have a game in hand.

“It was a game that didn’t go our way,” said Villas-Boas. “We had a good start. Defensively for most of the game we were bright and aware but from the moment Fulham scored it made it more difficult for us.

“The difference today for us at home was we couldn’t create as much as we normally create. I think we paid a price because of that. We had a good chance in the beginning of the first half, some good chances with [Jermain] Defoe late on but not enough for what we normally create and that was the decisive factor during the game.

“It was nothing to do with the players today, the effort and commitment was there. Probably the organisation wasn’t and that’s down to us to improve.

“After our last two Premier League defeats in a row we went on an amazing run and I hope it shifts somewhere. We just have to wait for a game that enables us to build on that confidence.”

Tottenham travel to Swansea City in their next Premier League game on 30 March after the international break.
