Tottenham 0 Fulham 1: Spurs will be title contenders soon, insists Jol
Tottenham 0 Fulham 1: Martin Jol backs his former club to develop into title contenders in seasons to come after his side's surprise win
Martin Jol watched his Fulham side grab a surprise victory at Tottenham – and then backed his former club to develop into Premier League title contenders in the next few years.
Dimitar Berbatov returned to haunt his former employers when he turned home Sascha Riether’s cross in the 52nd minute at White Hart Lane after Gareth Bale had come close to putting Spurs ahead.
Spurs’ third straight defeat in all competitions could prove costly in the race for Champions League qualification as it leaves the north Londoners just four points ahead of Arsenal, who have a game in hand.
But former Tottenham boss Jol is convinced that his old club are moving in the right direction under Andre Villas-Boas.
“Spurs will make it,” said Jol. “Over the last couple of year we’ve seen them grow better and better.
“Today was a bit different; [Benoit] Assou-Ekotto on the flank was a problem because he’s a left back.
“[They only need] one or two pieces in the puzzle and then they will be title contenders.”
Tottenham travel to Swansea City in their next Premier League game on 30 March after the international break.
