Andre Villas-Boas admitted his disappointment at seeing Tottenham Hotspur miss out on Champions League qualification but believes his side have learnt a “good lesson” for next season.

Gareth Bale struck another stunning late winner as Spurs beat 10-man Sunderland 1-0 at White Hart Lane, but Arsenal’s victory by the same scoreline at Newcastle saw the Gunners pip their north London rivals to fourth place.

Villas-Boas’s men were seven points ahead of the Gunners in the table after their win in the derby back in March.

And the Portuguese coach believes there are some crucial lessons that his side can take away from the disappointment of having to settle for a Europa League spot.

“We’re disappointed obviously,” Villas-Boas told Sky Sports. “We wanted to make that final push but Arsenal did their job and managed to sneak the fourth spot.

“Obviously to manage so many points and to not make it means that the level has gone up.

“It’s a reference to next season that we’ve done better than last year in terms of points but not in terms of clarification. It means the others have pushed on a level and next year we have to improve once more.

“It’s a good lesson that we take into next season, but it’s a pity we missed out because normally it would have been enough to qualify.”

The Portuguese coach added: “We’ve pushed two clubs that normally should go for titles and we aren’t far away from them.

“We want to be in their position in the future and we showed how competitive we can be. Hopefully next time round it will be different.”
