Andre Villas-Boas believes that it will now be “very difficult” for Arsenal to catch Tottenham after Spurs opened up a seven-point lead over their rivals with victory at White Hart Lane.

Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon both scored in a frantic 120-second spell before half-time to put the home side 2-0 up.

Arsenal pulled one back as Per Mertesacker nodded home five minutes after the restart, but Spurs held on to move up to third place in the Premier League table with 10 games to go.

With his side now just two points behind second-placed Manchester City, who travel to Aston Villa on Monday night, Villas-Boas feels Spurs’ “extreme confidence” will prove key as the season reaches its climax.

“Last year at this time was when Arsenal made the seven points to Tottenham and we know how it finished at the end of the season,” Villas-Boas, whose side are now 12 games unbeaten in the league, told Sky Sports. Obviously the motivations now are different.

“We are extremely confident, they are on a low at the moment. To be able to jump back is going to very difficult [for them]. We just have to continue doing our job.”

Villas-Boas, who watched Spurs record their 200th Premier League win on Sunday, added: “Obviously [the win is] very important for what it means. I think that nothing is finished yet. We still have to fight hard.

“We have to keep doing our job and get the most amount of points that we can to try to see if we can finish where we want to be.”
