Andre Villas-Boas is hopeful Gareth Bale will only miss “two games” after the Tottenham star suffered a nasty-looking ankle injury late on in Thursday’s Europa League draw against Basel.

Bale landed awkwardly on his right ankle while challenging David Degen for possession late in the quarter-final first-leg clash at White Hart Lane.

“It shouldn’t be as bad as it looks on the image,” said Villas-Boas after watching the 23-year-old be carried off on a stretcher following the 2-2 draw.

“There is a big, big possibility if we stay positive that he will be fit for the Manchester City game [on April 21] and it will only take him out of two games.”

He added: “We still have a big squad and the ability to adapt [without Bale]. We just have to play against Everton [in the Premier League at the weekend] and see when these players get back to make us even stronger.”

Bale has been in stunning form for Tottenham this season, scoring 22 goals in 37 games in all competitions for the north Londoners.

Tottenham host Everton in the Premier League at the weekend before next Thursday’s return leg in Basel.
