Hugo Lloris Didn’t have any chance of stopping the first goal but conceded a definite penalty which allowed Rooney to level – again. Usually so reliable but errors in consecutive games now for the Frenchman. 5/10

Kyle Walker Sweetly struck free-kick for the goal but undone by a mindless touch at the other end gifted Rooney the equaliser. 6

Michael Dawson Looked happier playing a deeper line but still showing his limitations against the best sides. 6

Vlad Chiriches Probably the best of Tottenham’s summer signings and looked assured today against an in-form attack. 7

Jan Vertonghen Not his best game for Spurs and given a tough time by Valencia who kept getting past the Belgian. 5

Sandro Still Tottenham’s best holding midfielder and has now added phenomenal long-range goals to his game, which is a useful skill. 7

Paulinho Looked solid next to Sandro in the middle. Has proved to be a useful buy and did his shift going forward as well as back. 7

Aaron Lennon His pace ignited some urgency into a languid Tottenham attacking unit. Had the beating of Evra on numerous occasions. 7

Mousa Dembele Game seemed to pass him by at times and was rarely influential. 6

Nacer Chadli A quiet afternoon for the Belgian winger. Spurs fans would have been surprised not to have seen his number go up for Townsend rather than Lennon’s. 5

Roberto Soldado Fluffed his lines in front of goal when given his one and only chance but more than useful in build-up play to bring others in. 7

Substitutes

Andro Townsend Full of running but not end product. Again. 6

Jermain Defoe Wasn’t able to muster a winner for his side. Will be growing increasingly frustrated that he isn’t starting these sorts of games. 6

David De Gea Could do little about Walker’s goal and two David De Gea’s wouldn’t have saved Sandro’s stunner. 6

Chris Smalling Not the most arduous of tasks marking Chadli but is certainly getting better in that right-back position. 7

Nemanja Vidic Coped well and rarely looked troubled. Goals from a free-kick and one wonder strike are difficult to defend against. 7

Jonny Evans Conceded the free-kick which led to the opener but aside from this dealt with the threat from Spurs well. 6

Patrice Evra Can’t have enjoyed facing Lennon all afternoon but was still able to get forward and support attacks. 6

Tom Cleverley Looked far more assured when playing with Kagawa ahead of him and Jones and Rooney dropping in. Unable to transform a game but was effective in a better set-up for him. 6

Phil Jones Arguably at fault for the opener but looked solid in a bolstered midfield. 6

Antonio Valencia Very effective down the right flank. Numerous crosses in and attacked the by-line with a great deal of success. 7

Shinji Kagawa The midfielder’s star is finally slowing rising under Moyes. Two good showings in a row now and linked the midfield and attack superbly. 7

Danny Welbeck Won the penalty and offered his usual supporting actor role to Rooney with effect. 6

Wayne Rooney (Man of the match) Combined his lone front-man role well with his desire to drop deep. Textbook poacher’s goal and a confident penalty. 8

Substitutes

Javier Hernandez Sent on to grab the winner. Looked lively but nothing dropped for him in the box. 6
