Wayne Rooney insisted that Manchester United can come away from Tottenham happy with a point after twice coming from behind to earn a draw at White Hart Lane.

Kyle Walker fired Spurs into the lead with a free-kick that flew under the United wall in the 18th minute, but Rooney was on hand to net an equaliser from close range 10 minutes later.

Sandro’s stunning long-range shot put the north Londoners back in front in the 54th minute before Rooney’s penalty moments later rescued a point for the defending champions.

“We didn’t start the game too well; we gave away a sloppy goal and made it difficult for ourselves,” Rooney told BT Sport.

“Thankfully we got back in the game towards half-time and played some decent stuff. We started the second half well but they hit us with the goal – a great strike from Sandro.

“I think the 2-2 at the end was probably a fair result.”

Rooney added: “I’m confident and playing well but that’s down to my team-mates. If you look at the likes of [Antonio] Valencia, who’s come in the last couple of games and has been fantastic. I’m just trying to do my job and help us be successful.”

The draw leaves United nine points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal, while Spurs are a point behind the Red Devils.

“We’re on a good run at the minute but we need to try and turn some of the draws into wins, that’s important for us,” Rooney continued.

“It was a difficult game today between two very good teams so a point is probably a good result in the end.”
