Tottenham haven’t signed good enough players, says Jan Molby

Jan Molby believes Tottenham Hotspur are paying the price for some poor summer signings – and reckons the blame should lay at the feet of Franco Baldini and Daniel Levy.

Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas has come under increasing pressure following a 6-0 thrashing at Manchester City last Sunday followed by an unconvincing 2-0 win over Norwegian minnows Tromso on Thursday.

And Molby feels Tottenham have failed to adequately replace Real Madrid star Gareth Bale after Spurs signed Erik Lamela in a club-record £30m deal from Serie A outfit Roma.

Whilst the former Reds midfielder believes Villas-Boas should take some of the blame for recent results, Molby feels the real issue is the poor signings made this summer.

“I see a lot of faults with Andre Villas-Boas but his job at Tottenham shouldn’t be under-threat so early in the season,” Molby told Liverpool Echo.

“He’s stubborn and he doesn’t always play a system which suits the players he’s got.

“But I think the director of football and chairman at White Hart Lane also need to take a look at themselves.

“Some of the players they signed during that big summer spending spree simply aren’t good enough.

“The tempo of their game is too slow and part of that is down to Paulinho.

“As for Erik Lamela, he’s a left-footer who can’t play on the left. He was bought as a direct replacement for Gareth Bale and whoever decided he was worth £30m should be sacked.

“I played for the Liverpool Legends in South Africa recently and at the age of 40 Patrik Berger is still a better player than Lamela.”
