Toby Alderweireld delivers update on his Tottenham future
Toby Alderweireld insists that he is planning to remain as a Tottenham Hotspur player for the future
Toby Alderweireld has insisted that he is planning to remain as a Tottenham Hotspur player this summer despite the speculation linking him with a move away from the club.
The Belgian defender is widely regarded as one of the top centre-halves in European football and he currently has a year left on his contract with the north London side.
Alderweireld will be able to leave Spurs for just £25m before the final two weeks of the summer transfer window due to a clause in his contract, which was activated when the club triggered a one-year extension earlier this season.
The 30-year-old has been linked with a move away from Spurs in the past and that speculation is likely to heighten this summer due to his contractual situation at the club.
However, the player himself has insisted that he is planning for life at Spurs next season and is not thinking about a move away.
Speaking in an interview quoted by the Evening Standard, Alderweireld said when asked about his future: “I’m going to say the same thing that I’ve been saying for the past couple of years.
“The only focus is Spurs, because of this focus I think I had a good season as well. I have one year left on my contract, so in my head, I will play for Spurs next season.”
Alderweireld and his Tottenham Hotspur team-mates are currently preparing for their crunch Champions League final showdown against Liverpool FC in Madrid on Saturday night.
The Lilywhites are aiming to try and win their first ever trophy under Mauricio Pochettino in Spain.
