Dimitar Berbatov tells Tottenham to forget about appointing Mourinho
Spurs legend Dimitar Berbatov gives his verdict on Mauricio Pochettino's future at Tottenham Hotspur
Dimitar Berbatov believes Tottenham Hotspur should stick with Mauricio Pochettino rather than appoint Jose Mourinho.
The Tottenham manager has been contending with speculation surrounding his future at the north London side after a poor start to the 2019-20 Premier League season.
Spurs slumped to a 3-0 loss to Brighton at the Amex Stadium last weekend a matter of days after Tottenham succumbed to a 7-2 defeat by Bayern Munich at their home stadium.
Pochettino’s side have already lost three times in the Premier League this season to leave the Champions League runners-up a long way off the pace in the title race.
The Argentinian head coach has failed to win a major trophy since taking over the reins at Spurs despite the north London side’s undoubted progress under Pochettino.
Former Chelsea FC and Manchester United manager Mourinho has been linked with the Spurs job in recent weeks as speculation continues to build surrounding Pochettino’s future.
However, ex-Spurs striker Berbatov believes Tottenham should stick with Pochettino despite the lure of Mourinho.
“Pochettino is the guy that needs to stay there, he’s been there for a long time,” said Berbatov, a Betfair ambassador, as quoted by Metro.
“There has been a lot of talk about Mourinho taking over at Spurs, I think he would have difficulty as well.
“Would he make Spurs better? I don’t know because it is the same team.
“Yes you can have a bit of a lift in the beginning, like Manchester United did when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came in.”
Tottenham will host Watford in their next Premier League game on Saturday afternoon.
Spurs lost 2-0 to Liverpool FC in the Champions League final in Madrid last season to miss out on a first trophy under Pochettino.
