Glenn Hoddle has urged Mauricio Pochettino to start Harry Kane on the bench when Tottenham Hotspur take on Liverpool FC in the Champions League final next weekend.

The England international has been sidelined with an injury since Kane sustained an ankle problem during Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-0 win over Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

The prolific Tottenham striker is facing a battle to be fit for the biggest game of his career so far when Spurs taken on Liverpool FC in the showpiece in Madrid next weekend.

Kane is thought to be on the brink of a return to full training with the north London side less than a week ahead of the Champions League final on Saturday 1 June.

However, former Tottenham midfielder Hoddle believes Spurs should avoid rushing Kane back into the starting line up due to the intensity and pace of the final against Liverpool FC.

“I’m hoping that Harry Kane is on the bench. I’d put him on the bench because I think the tempo of the game will be very, very quick at the beginning,” Hoddle told football.london.

“He’s not going to be 100 per cent fit and that ankle will still have to be strengthened if nothing else. Long-term there’s another scenario he’s got to protect it for.

“I would say every player on that pitch, whatever the scoreline, whether he’s coming on to score a goal or work defensively in the last half hour it’s a boost.”

Tottenham booked their place in the Champions League final after Spurs came from 3-0 down on aggregate to progress on away goals after Lucas Moura netted a hat-trick in Amsterdam.

Liverpool FC lost 3-0 to FC Barcelona in the first leg of their semi-final before a 4-0 victory at Anfield in the return fixture to reach the Champions League final in successive seasons.
