Phil Thompson states his prediction for Tottenham v Liverpool FC
The Liverpool legend doesn't expect Tottenham Hotspur to struggle against the Reds at White Hart Lne this weekend
Phil Thompson has warned Liverpool that Tottenham Hotspur won’t suffer with a hangover from the Champions League when the two Premier League rivals meet at White Hart Lane on Sunday afternoon.
The Reds will make the trip to north London fresh from a 7-0 win against Slovenian side Maribor to secure their first Champions League victory of the group-stage campaign.
Worryingly for Tottenham, Liverpool’s forward Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah all got on the score sheet to help the Reds ease to a commanding win.
Spurs, meanwhile, battled to a 1-1 draw with Champions League holders Real Madrid after Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty cancelled out Raphael Varane’s own goal.
Tottenham have only managed to win one of their last four games at Wembley and Spurs lost 2-1 to defending champions Chelsea at the home of English football back in August.
Former Liverpool captain Thompson insisted that he doesn’t expect Spurs to be sluggish against Jurgen Klopp’s size given the importance of the Premier League fixture.
“I’ve been to the Bernabeu as a player and an assistant and it takes a lot out of you mentally and emotionally, but this is still one of the big games of the Premier League season,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“You might be concerned for Spurs against a lesser team, that they’d struggle to get up for it, but when the big games come to town, you expect the players to raise their game.
“All fans expect players to turn up for every game but it is the same as for fans in the sense that they might not sing with quite the same effort and enthusiasm for as a lesser fixture. It is easier to get yourself back up for a big game.”
Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table to secure a return to the Champions League last term.
The Reds signed four players in the summer transfer window in an attempt to overhaul their squad.
