Jamie Carragher sends urgent message to Tottenham about Mauricio Pochettino
The Liverpool legend opens up about the future of Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino
Jamie Carragher has warned Tottenham Hotspur to prepare for Mauricio Pochettino to be tempted with offers from Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain in the future.
The north London side were brilliant 3-1 winners against La Liga giants Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night thanks to goals from Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen at Wembley.
Tottenham are sitting at the top of their Champions League group and are in pole position to secure first place heading into the knockout round of Europe’s premier club competition.
Spurs finished in third place in the Premier League in the 2015-16 season before Tottenham were runners-up behind champions Chelsea last term.
The Lilywhites have made significant progress since Pochettino took over the reins at White Hart Lane from Tim Sherwood in 2014.
The Argentinian coach has brought through Harry Kane and Dele Alli at the north London club, while he has established a solid defensive unit in Hugo Lloris, Toby Aldweirweld and Jan Vertonghen.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher believes Pochettino could receive from tempting offers from some of Europe’s cash-rich teams if Tottenham continue their excellent progress.
“I said on Wednesday it was a privilege to be at Wembley to witness Spurs’ performance,” Carragher told the Daily Telegraph.
“As a neutral I am sure I speak for a lot of people in this country when I say it will be a shame if this manager and this team does not win a major trophy in the next two or three years.
“That will be extremely difficult with the financial might of the Manchester clubs and Chelsea. There will be a temptation to leave for Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain, who I have no doubt will offer Pochettino the chance to join the managerial elite as a trophy winner swifter than might be possible in north London.
“The greatest managers not only collect silverware, but leave a lasting legacy. Pochettino can achieve both at Tottenham. If he succeeds, Bielsa’s student will eclipse his master.”
Tottenham are in third place in the Premier League table after a 1-0 loss to Manchester United last weekend.
