Tottenham transfers: Ex-striker urges Spurs to back Lamela and Soldado
Tottenham transfers: Clive Allen urges his former club to give Roberto Soldado and Erik Lamela more playing time next season
Tottenham should give Roberto Soldado and Erik Lamela the chance to prove themselves at White Hart Lane next season, according to Clive Allen.
Lamela joined Spurs in a club-record £30m deal from Roma last summer but struggled due to inconsistent form and injuries.
I think Soldado has a good track record in terms of scoring goals
Soldado also arrived in north London in 2013 but managed just six goals in 28 Premier League games for the Lilywhites.
However, former Spurs striker Allen feels that the duo should be given a second season to prove their worth in the English top flight.
Allen told talkSPORT: “I would stick with [Roberto] Soldado because I think he has a good track record in terms of scoring goals, but obviously not in the Premier League as he found it difficult to adapt to the different style of play and the types of opportunity which were created for him.
“Erik Lamela has got to play, too. Mentally, whether he’s strong enough [has been questioned] but you’ve got to see whether he’s capable of performing over a period of time.
“It might mean leaving him in games when perhaps his form isn’t what you expect, otherwise Tottenham will have to cut their losses on what looks to be a horrendous purchase.”
