David Pleat believes Tottenham Hotspur will have completed some “wonderful business” if Gareth Bale seals a world-record move to Real Madrid.

The 24-year-old Spurs winger is being widely touted to complete an eye-watering £93m switch to Los Blancos on Friday after relentlessly being linked with Madrid throughout the summer transfer window.

Andre Villas-Boas has already spent nearly £60m on recruiting Nacer Chadli, Étienne Capoue, Paulinho and club-record signing Roberto Soldado in the last couple of months ahead of Bale’s touted departure.

And former Tottenham manager Pleat believes the north London side are getting an “incredible” fee despite expressing his concerns about how Bale’s move could distort the transfer market.

“It’s an incredible amount of money and it’s wonderful business by Tottenham to get that amount of money should the deal go through,” Pleat told BBC
Five Live
.

“The problem is it raises the prices of a mass of mediocrity that is around and players are being sold for more than their real value.”

On Thursday night, the Spanish club’s official online store was already selling No11 shirts with the winger’s name on the back before the section of the site in question was closed for maintenance work.
