Tottenham transfers: Jan Vertonghen hints that he could leave White Hart Lane if Spurs miss out on top-four finish
Jan Vertonghen has hinted that he could seek an exit from Tottenham in the summer should Spurs fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
The north Londoners suffered a blow to their hopes of a top-four finish on Sunday as they were beaten 1-0 by Norwich City at Carrow Road.
Let’s see after the end of the season and after the World Cup
That defeat left Tim Sherwood’s side six points behind fourth-placed Liverpool with 11 games left to play this term.
And Vertonghen remained coy when asked if he would consider his future should Spurs miss out on a spot in Europe’s elite club competition.
“Those are always difficult questions,” said Vertonghen.
“What I want is to play in the Champions League with Tottenham, so, hopefully, I will get there this year.
“I don’t complain about anything. Let’s see after the end of the season and after the World Cup.”
The Belgium international acknowledges that Spurs have plenty of work to do if they are to finish in the top four this term.
“We need to start playing as a team more because individually we are good enough,” he said.
“We will need quite a few points from the games against Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool. They are still competing for the title, so they will be tough games but we have shown we can beat the top teams.”
