Jan Vertonghen has admitted he would love to play Manchester City again this weekend so Tottenham Hotspur could make amends for their 6-0 drubbing at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Spain international Jesus Navas opened the scoring before Spurs midfielder Sandro put the ball past his own goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and Sergio Aguero scored goals either side of half-time.

Tottenham’s misery was compounded when Alvaro Negredo notched his first strike of the afternoon in the second half before Navas, who joined in a £15m move from Sevilla this summer, completed the six-goal rout.

Despite the demoralising result, Vertonghen says Spurs can beat reigning champions Manchester United at White Hart Lane next weekend.

“We came here with a good motivation to get a good result, but to concede a goal after a few seconds was a bad thing if you want to win,” Vertonghen is quoted as saying by London24.

“I think we did well after that and then we conceded a second, and it was a difficult game for us after that.

“They scored very easily – we gave at least three or four goals away too easily and that was our own fault. City are a very strong team. I’d love to play this game again next week because we’re better than this.

“We were very disappointed because we felt we could do something here. We need to talk now with the group and get ourselves motivated to bounce back on Sunday against Man United.

“It’s a good thing that that’s our next game [in the league]. We play at home and I know we have the support of our crowd and we’ll be able to win the game on Sunday.”
