Tromso

Benny Lekström Had to be alert to a couple of Townsend’s trademark pot-shots. Couldn’t do anything to prevent Causevic’s own goal. 5/10

Ruben Kristiansen The right-back offered a threat down the wing as Townsend failed to track back. He also kept the England man well-marshalled. 7

Jarosław Fojut Was made to look silly by Soldado’s wizardry in the 42nd minute. However, the Tromso centre-half had the last laugh as he managed to get his head or a foot to most crosses into the area – much to the Tottenham striker’s frustration. 6

Adnan Сausevic Good block to push Capoue’s goal-bound effort wide. Inadvertently deflected a Sigurdsson free-kick into his own net. 4

William Frantzen Came up against Chadli and Sigurdsson, who looked to attack down the left. Didn’t win the battle. 4

Remi Johansen Spent most the first half chasing shadows as Sigurdsson and Chadli drifted past the Tromso midfielder. At least it kept the No17 warm in the freezing conditions. 4

Thomas Bendiksen Escaped without punishment for an ill-timed challenge on Townsend. The Tromso captain showed glimpses of class but was ultimately out-classed by better opponents. 5

Morten Moldskred Almost had the chance to test Friedel in the first half but Fryers recovered well. Did little else to concern the Tottenham rearguard. 6

Thomas Drage Showed touches of quality but his team-mates were not on the same wavelength. Also provided a threat from set-pieces. 7

Magnus Andersen Won a free-kick in a great position in the first half. It was his only meaningful contribution to the clash. 5

Zdeněk Ondrášek Had a first-minute chance to score against an out-of-form Spurs defence but dragged his finish wide. The mohawk-sporting striker robbed Townsend in the second half and earned a good foul. 6

Brad Friedel Had very little to do aside from a couple of routine saves from set-pieces. 6

Kyle Naughton The England Under-21 international did make a couple of good tackles but looked nervous. Produced a couple of misplaced passes, as well as an under hit back-pass which ensured Friedel was alert. 5

Vlad Chiricheş Gave away a cheap free-kick midway through the first half but wasn’t tested otherwise. The Romanian defender put Сausevic under pressure for the opener after the interval. 7

Michael Dawson The Spurs captain was almost caught out within 180 seconds but Ondrášek spared his blushes. Booked for a cynical foul after a Townsend mistake gave Ondrášek a chance to run at his defence. Made a great block from the ensuing free-kick. 6

Ezekiel Fryers Was reluctant to cross when he did overlap Chadli. Dealt well with any threat down his wing. 6

Nacer Chadli Glanced a header across the Tromso goal. Had Tottenham’s best chance of the first half after being played through by Sigurdsson but blasted his effort over the crossbar. 6

Étienne Capoue Had a shot deflected wide by a Tromso defender. Picked up a booking for a ill-timed challenge on the Tromso captain. 5

Mousa Dembele Looked rusty in the opening minute but a marauding run into the Tromso box gave the Belgian confidence. Was pretty average throughout, although he did score his first goal of the season with 15 minutes remaining. Missed a late chance for a second. 6

Gylfi Sigurdsson (man of the match) Had an early tame shot which drifted over the Tromso crossbar. Came closer in the 18th minute but fizzed his effort narrowly wide. Brilliant through ball for Chadli but the midfielder wasted the chance to test the Tromso goalkeeper. Produced the free-kick which led to the winner, as well as the pass for Dembele’s strike. 8

Andros Townsend It was a very ‘Townsend’ performance from the winger. Showed plenty of energy but often lacked an end product. Also gave his defensive team-mates a headache with some lax passes. 6

Roberto Soldado Had to drop deep to get involved in the play. His highlight of the first half was a neat trick and turn past Fojut. Teed up Sigurdsson for a second-half strike but was penalised for a handball. 5

Substitutes

Jan Vertonghen If he came on to help close up shop, the Belgian ignored his manager’s orders. Offered a threat down the left wing. 6

Lewis Holtby Looked solid when introduced with 15 minutes remaining. 6
