US Open 2014: Caroline Wozniacki progresses despite bad hair day
US Open 2014: Caroline Wozniacki moves into third round despite a hair-raising incident during straight sets win on Wednesday
Caroline Wozniacki endured a bad hair day at the US Open when the Dane’s ponytail became caught in her racquet during a straight sets victory on Wednesday.
The former world number one found her long-flowing blonde hair tangled in the frame of her tennis racquet as the 2009 US Open finalist looked to unleash a double-handed backhand, almost “taking her head off”.
I was like, ‘Okay which way is it tangled?’, I was trying to kind of figure it out. I was like, ‘Maybe if I pull it, it will untangle itself’

The incident didn’t scupper the 10th seed’s chances of reaching the third round, though, as Wozniacki sealed a 6-3 6-4 win against Belarusian opponent Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
“It used to happen when I didn’t braid my hair,” Wozniacki said.
“That’s why I started braiding it. Once it gets to a certain length sometimes it can get stuck in the arm or the racquet.
“It’s a first, you know, when it’s braided that it’s been stuck that good in my racquet.
“I still tried to hit the ball. Almost took my head off.”
Wozniacki added: “I didn’t know. I was like, ‘Okay which way is it tangled?’, I was trying to kind of figure it out. I was like, ‘Maybe if I pull it, it will untangle itself’.
“But it just didn’t happen. I didn’t know whether to just laugh at it or be annoyed or which emotion to have.”
Back to the tennis, Wozniacki was pleased to see off a potentially tricky opponent in straight sets and enjoy a well-earned day off ahead of her third-round match against 18th seed Andrea Petkovic.
“It’s nice. Obviously we have a day off tomorrow,” Wozniacki said.
“We can get some rest. But I’m happy to be through in straight sets. It’s nice to go through in two.
“She wasn’t an easy opponent. She’s young and hungry. She didn’t have anything to lose, so she was going for her shots. I’m just happy to be through.”
