US Open 2016: Andy Murray delivers verdict on impressive start for Brits
The British number one has his say on what has been a competitive start for his compatriots at US Open
Andy Murray says he has been impressed with his compatriots’ start to the US Open after five British players made it into the second round at Flushing Meadows.
The reigning Wimbledon champion booked his place in the next round thanks to 6-3 6-2 6-2 over Czech Republic opponent Lukas Rosol on Tuesday night.
Murray is joined by Richard Gasquet’s surprise conqueror Kyle Edmund and Dan Evans in round two on the men’s side of the US Open draw.
Naomi Brady beat compatriot Laura Robson in three sets in the battle of the Brits after Johanna Konta had sealed her progression on Monday afternoon.
Speaking after his straights sets victory over Rosol, Murray delivered his verdict on a competitive start from the British contingent in New York.
“It’s been a pretty good start for the Brits,” Murray told his post-match media conference.
Murray continued: “I saw the first couple of sets of Kyle’s match. That’s been it.
“I didn’t get to see any of the matches [on Tuesday].
“Kyle played extremely well. I practiced with him the day beforehand. He was hitting the ball good in practice. He’s improving all of the time. To win a match like that in a slam that comfortably against a top player, a guy that’s been at the top for a long time, is a very good sign.
“It was good for him. Then obviously all the other Brits, obviously Naomi and Laura had a tight match. Dan got through, you know, a tricky one against Ram. Konta has been solid for a long time. Heather has never played so well here.”
Second seed Murray will play Spaniard Marcel Granollers in the second round.
