Viagogo has said it was “surprised” by Bundesliga club Schalke’s decision to terminate their partnership with the secondary ticketing company amid claims of contract breaches.

Viagogo became Schalke’s official ticketing partner from 1 July but the agreement was terminated just a week later by the German side.

Viagogo insisted that the move came as a “surprise” and said in a statement that it had “fulfilled all aspects of the contract”.

A viagogo statement continued: “After two years of negotiations the partnership between Schalke and viagogo started 1 July 2013. Before Schalke sent out the cancellation letter on 9 July, viagogo received a formal letter on very short notice regarding Schalke’s views on how VAT should be collected.”

Viagogo spokesperson Steve Roest added: “We launched the service and then the next thing we know we get a letter about VAT, which has nothing to do with anything in the contract. As usual, the VAT is charged on top of our fees. Schalke raised questions about this.”

Viagogo also said that it will continue to offer a secure marketplace for Schalke tickets without the partnership, adding that sales are “increasing rapidly” despite the termination of the contract.

Viagogo added that it “would not comment about its legal position at this stage, but will of course review its position”.
