And Vidic tipped Rooney, who scored in a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday night, to continue to be an important player for the 20-time English champions.
“Wayne is a big player and it is important for him to stay,” Vidic told Sky Sports News.
“Wayne has signed a long-term contract and he will be one of the most important players in the next few years.”
On the possibility of Rooney succeeding him as United captain, Rooney added: “Obviously it is the manager’s decision and he has to choose his captain.
