Gareth Bale has been nominated for both the PFA player of the year and young player of the year awards, which will be announced on 28 April.

The Tottenham Hotspur star faces competition from Michael Carrick, Eden Hazard, Juan Mata, Luis Suárez and Robin van Persie for the top prize.

The Wales winger could also pick up the young player of the year award, with Hazard, Christian Benteke, Romelu Lukaku, Danny Welbeck and Jack Wilshere nominated.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction from the professionals after the shortlists for the PFA end-of-season awards were revealed.

Former West Ham United striker John Hartson ‏(@JohnHartson10) won’t reveal his picks: “Who’s your player of the year? And who’s your young player of the year? I’ve got my two picks!! In my honest and humble view, it should be Bale and Benteke. But it won’t be. It will be Van Persie and Bale will get young player..”

England legend Gary Lineker (‏@GaryLineker) isn’t too surprised by the nominees: “PFA player of the year top six; Suárez, Bale, RVP, Mata, Hazard and Carrick. First 4 pick themselves. Michu, Baines, Cazorla, all unlucky.”

Former Leicester City midfielder Robbie Savage ‏(@RobbieSavage8) agrees: “No Michu is a surprise!”

Ex-Nottingham Forest star Jan Aage Fjortoft (‏@JanAageFjortoft) names his favourites but is surprised to see Michu omitted: “So Bale young player of the year and Suárez player of the year???? @PFA Your opinion? Why isnt Michu nominated? 18 goals. Won the League Cup.”

Former Manchester United defender Viv Anderson ‏(@Anderson_Viv) feels Rafael da Silva deserved to be among the young nominees: “Thought Rafael should be in for the PFA young player of the year award. Been one of the best defenders in the league this year #unlucky”

Ex-Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris ‏(@morriskid) has his say: “Eye catching silky players/goal scorers are easier to pick ahead of maybe more consistent performers..even among the players themselves!! In saying that..good to see Carrick with some recognition finally!!! Leighton Baines deserved to be in that 6 for me this year!!!”

And former Ipswich Town manager Jim Magilton ‏(@magilton7) is struggling to pick winners: “POTY- Suárez/ Van Persie YPOTY- Bale/ Benteke. Winners after deliberation and brunch!”
