Premier League clubs ban Vuvuzelas before new season

A host of Premier League clubs have moved to ban vuvuzelas in stadia ahead of the new season.

Arsenal, Birmingham, Everton, Fulham, West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur have told their fans that the plastic horns will not be permitted at matches due to safety concerns.

Tottenham, one of the first clubs to implement a ban, released the following statement on the club’s official website: “We are concerned that the presence of the instruments within the stadium pose unnecessary risks and could impact on the ability of all supporters to hear any emergency safety announcements.”

Blackpool, Chelsea and Manchester City said they have no plans to ban them, with the remaining Premier League clubs undecided.

Arsenal announced a ban at Emirates Stadium yesterday and a statement by the club read: “The decision has been taken to ensure the enjoyment and safety of supporters on Matchdays, which is of paramount importance to the Club.”

Meanwhile Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o has defended the use of the instruments during the World Cup.

“I loved it,” he told AFP. “It is a way of cheering and encouraging the players and the fans.

“Vuvuzelas have now become famous and we will keep talking about them for many years to come,” he added.
