Theo Walcott has revealed his disappointment at being left out of England’s 23-man World Cup squad.

The Arsenal winger was the shock omission from Fabio Capello’s squad after having been widely expected to travel to South Africa and provide the England manager another option on the right.

Walcott, 21, admitted to being disappointed at missing out on what would be his second World Cup but wished his teammates good luck in the tournament.

“I am very disappointed not to be included in the squad going out to South Africa, but completely respect Mr Capello’s decision,” Walcott said.

“I would like to wish the team the best of luck and hope they have a really successful tournament.”

Sunderland’s Darren Bent also missed out on a place in the squad despite his prolific record for the North East club this season, scoring 24 goals for the Black Cats in the Premier League.

Bent also said he was disappointed to be left out of the squad and said he had hoped his good club form would have earned him a place in Capello’s side travelling to South Africa.

“I feel really disappointed,” Bent told Sunderland’s Official Website. “I’ve always said to myself: if you play well and do your best for Sunderland then there’s a chance you can go to the biggest tournament in the world.”

“Obviously on this occasion it hasn’t worked out.

“Of course I still want the boys to do well. I’ve got a lot of friends in the England set up. They’re a great bunch of lads and even though I won’t be there, I’ll be supporting them.”

Tom Huddlestone, Michael Dawson, Adam Johnson, Scott Parker and Leighton Baines were the other players cut from Capello’s 23-man squad who will fly to South Africa today.
